This is our first ritual deep-dive of this series, where we will explore the use of candles throughout the world and the significance they hold across different cultures, helping us better understand our own rituals and practices.
.
First we will take you to Northern Indias Ganga Aarti Ceremony. Located in Varanasi, Indias holy city, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Here is where this daily ceremony takes place, on the riverbanks of the Ganges.
.
At dusk, locals and tourists flock to the riverbanks on foot and in traditional wooden boats. Chants and the fragrance of incense fill the air, as candles nested in small cups made from leaves and flowers are released onto the river, floating along the top of the water. Those releasing candles are encouraged to make a wish or think of a loved one.
.
After the candles have started to make their way down the river the ceremony continues on the riverbank where a group of young Pandits (Hindu teacher) draped in silk robes, raise huge brass flaming lamps in honour of the River Goddess. They all move perfectly in time together. The smell of sandalwood fills the air. Although this ceremony happens daily, it still maintains it’s beauty and magic. A truly inspiring ritual in mindfulness, community and reflection.
